Spring arrives early in the eastern Japanese town of Kawazu, famous for its spectacular cherry blossoms. Located just outside Tokyo, this small town is home to around 8,000 cherry trees that bloom earlier than most, drawing millions of visitors each February. The lush, pink-filled landscapes create an atmosphere that feels deeply romantic and serene.
Known as sakura in Japanese, cherry blossoms usually bloom in late March or early April, but Kawazu’s trees belong to a rare early-flowering variety. A small local train carries passengers through tunnels of soft pink hues and sweet floral scents, while at night, illuminated blossoms reflect beautifully on the calm waters of the Izu Peninsula.
Cherry blossoms hold deep cultural significance in Japan, symbolizing the fleeting nature of beauty and life itself. Because of this symbolism, they frequently appear in Japanese art and culture and have become one of the country’s most iconic and beloved images.
