We spoke with one of the subreddit’s standout landscape photographers, Marcin Zając. Born in Poland and now based in Northern California, Marcin balances a career as a software engineer with a deep passion for capturing the beauty of nature.
“After graduating from university, I moved to the United States for work,” Marcin shared. “I used the opportunity to explore the western US and instantly fell in love with its landscapes. I bought a camera to document my travels, and photography quickly became my greatest passion.”

Marcin has captured countless memorable moments on his Instagram, but one of his standout successes came with “The Magic Mushroom”—a photo that earned nearly 50,000 upvotes on Reddit a few years ago.
In the image, he immortalized a mushroom-shaped hoodoo rising from the New Mexico badlands, framed perfectly beneath the sprawling Milky Way, blending geological wonder with cosmic beauty.

15-While walking through the forest, I discovered a Ponderosa pine that had been struck by lightning. I contacted the Forest Service, and they eventually put it out—but not before I managed to capture a few photos near Flagstaff.
Marcin usually captures scenes under clear blue skies, but in this case, the reddish clusters of clouds added an unexpected layer of drama and visual interest.
“Before the trip, I researched the area to find the most interesting rock formations,” Marcin explained. “I didn’t know the exact location of this ‘mushroom rock,’ but I discovered it while hiking during the day. After sunset, I returned to the same spot to photograph the night sky.”
Fun fact: although the image appears to have been taken at sunset, the warm glow in the sky is actually caused by light pollution from nearby towns.
