A new scientific idea called panpsychism has recently gained attention among researchers. Panpsychism suggests that consciousness may be a fundamental property of the universe itself, meaning that the universe could possess some form of awareness.
Scientists have long tried to understand the origins of the universe and humanity’s place within it, but many questions remain unanswered. One scientist exploring this idea is Gregory Matloff, whose work proposes that consciousness might play a role in the behavior of the cosmos—an idea that challenges traditional views of physics.
According to Matloff, a physicist at New York City College of Technology, in his recently published paper, humans could be like the rest of the universe in substance and spirit. Futurism reported that a “proto-consciousness field” could extend throughout all space. Basically, in lamens terms, the entire cosmos could be self-aware.
Another supporter of panpsychism is Christof Koch of the Allen Institute for Brain Science. He says that biological organisms are conscious because they can change their behavior to thwart a bad situation when approaching a new one. Due to this view, he is trying to see if he can measure the level of consciousness a being displays.
To explore this idea, scientists are conducting experiments designed to test how consciousness might arise in connected systems. One such experiment involves linking the brains of two mice to see whether information can pass between them and whether they begin to function like a single integrated system.
Christof Koch explains the reasoning behind this research: “The only dominant theory we have of consciousness suggests it is linked to complexity — a system’s ability to respond to its own state and influence its future. In theory, even relatively simple systems could possess a form of consciousness. In principle, some purely physical systems that are not biological or organic might also be conscious.”
