Robert Kolenik, a Dutch designer known for his high-end sustainable creations, has designed an impressive kitchen countertop supported by a large built-in aquarium.
Called the “Ocean Keuken,” the kitchen island is actually shaped like a large “L.” Mirrors cleverly hide the storage space inside the counter, creating the illusion that the aquarium is larger than it really is. In addition, the countertop can be lifted with the push of a button, making it easy to access and maintain the aquarium.
Kolenik explains that the counter can be customized to meet each client’s preferences. Although his projects are typically luxurious, his main focus is on creating designs that are environmentally responsible and have a minimal carbon footprint.

“The tank is based on a freshwater culture, so it is low maintenance. We integrated a complete water filtering system, which is very quiet, and integrated it in one of the four cabinets.”

“I was commissioned to design a luxury villa. Where the client wished for an aquarium close to the kitchen zone,” Robert Kolenik told Dynamics Designer. “Because of this, I came up with making something out of the box, which took us quite some time to engineer, as it has many technical challenges that we had to face.”

“We made two aquariums, and several requests came in this week. “
