As the holidays come to an end, many people feel that the period right after the festive season can be especially melancholic. It’s the perfect moment to explore these emotional comics by 27-year-old artist Tum Natakorn Ulit from Bangkok. Known for his distinctive style and deeply moving stories, Ulit’s comics often tug at the heartstrings. Although the themes vary, they frequently share a relatable, bittersweet sense of tragedy.
Ulit explains that the inspiration for his cartoons and stories comes mainly from personal experiences. “Mostly from pain and my own experiences that I interpret into comics so I can express those feelings,” he says.
Tragedy itself can be complex and ambiguous. Seeing someone in a tragic situation can be heartbreaking and painful, yet it can also be strangely captivating. This emotional response connects closely to the idea of catharsis, a concept described by the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle. In his view, witnessing tragedy can cleanse the soul and renew a person’s appreciation for life.
In many ways, Ulit’s comics capture this idea in a powerful and condensed form. They may break your heart as the story unfolds, but even after the most unexpected twists, a small ray of hope often emerges through the darkness.
