Japanese Artist Portrays Animals Using Watercolor Flower Arrangements

Every artist develops a distinctive way of making art. For painters and illustrators, selecting materials and colors that align with their artistic approach is important. Japanese artist Hiroki Takeda, for example, is well known for his vibrant watercolor works. His paintings often portray adorable animals formed from delicate floral patterns. This imaginative blend of plants and animals gives his work a signature look, making his style both unique and instantly recognizable.

Dynamics Designer contacted Hiroki’s management team, who described him as one of their most distinctive artists.

Curious to learn more about the inspiration behind his unique painting style—where animals are depicted through intricate floral and plant patterns—they shared some insight into his background. Hiroki’s mother had a deep love for flowers and greenery, so from a young age he grew up surrounded by them, both in the garden and inside the home. This early exposure to nature strongly influenced the artistic direction he later developed.

So, it was only natural to take inspiration from his surroundings regarding what to paint. Hiroki told us, “I knew I wanted to draw pictures with flowers and plants as motifs when searching for original artworks. When I looked at pictures of animals, the flow of their hair looked like leaves, and the scales of iguanas looked like a collection of flowers. At that time, I felt that there might be some unique expression that I could apply to my paintings.”

What also draws the eye in the paintings is that they are made with watercolors that are not that easy to manipulate, but obviously, it’s worth it as the results are excellent.

Hiroki told us that he took watercolor classes at university and fell in love with them: “I was shocked by how beautiful the watercolors were painted by the special instructor I met there. I learned about the beauty of watercolor as an art medium, and he taught me about it.”

Of course, every artist evolves, develops, and searches for new ways to improve or challenge themselves. Hiroki thinks his painting style will evolve even if he doesn’t want it. He says, “I am never satisfied with my expression, and I can only imagine that my worldview is just beginning and evolving.”
