About Des Forges Residence: Embracing Culture and Nature

This project expresses a strong creative vision that honors the cultural heritage of Boulevard des Forges while responding to the site’s physical constraints. Inspired by a narrative where nature and culture intertwine, the surrounding landscape evokes stories and legends shaped by the winding St. Maurice River. The residence emerges as a sculptural work rooted in its environment.

The Architect as Craftsman

Drawing from the region’s industrial yet poetic past, the architect adopts the role of a craftsman. The residence is carefully shaped to reflect the river’s curves, the site’s topography, and the existing vegetation, creating a design that feels both intentional and organic.

A Private Forest Retreat

Reached by a 265-meter private driveway, the residence gradually reveals itself through dense pine trees. Its distinctive black volume appears subtly within the forest, with entry from the lower level on the wooded side.

Building Along the Cliff

Positioned 55 meters above the river within a sensitive cliffside zone, the home responds to strict regulations and a steep terrain. The structure aligns with the natural profile of the cliff, set back 20 meters, allowing expansive views while respecting environmental constraints.

A Composition of Three Wings

The residence is composed of three interconnected wings resting on a natural stone base. A primary steel structure supports the design, complemented by exposed wood elements. At the heart of the home, a monumental staircase connects the volumes and becomes a central architectural feature.

Materiality and Visual Identity

The exterior is clad in black spruce planks, chosen for their understated presence. This creates a bold yet subtle contrast with the surrounding landscape, giving the house a mysterious, almost floating appearance among the trees.

Warmth Within Nature

Inside, a knot-free cedar ceiling introduces warmth and softness, extending outward into a screened terrace. This contrast between dark exterior and warm interior enhances the connection between architecture and nature.

Thoughtful Spatial Design

The entrance is marked by a covered outdoor space, protected from the elements and framed by arches inspired by the historic Les Forges du Saint-Maurice. Inside, the home opens into a central hub where the three wings meet. The upper level hosts the main living spaces and primary suite, while the lower level accommodates guest areas, garages, and service spaces.
